Student out of form...??

Can a student be out of form as do cricketers and other sportsmen.I have a great friend rakesh(name changed ofcourse..).I know he is highly talented. But he doesnt have excellent records to prove his intelligence(those are quite good thou..). He always tells me that he doesnt have good marks since he doesnt care and i know that its true. But lately he appeared for CAT and didnt do well even there...which he was quite confident of. He was very depressed after that...According to him...he didnt know what went wrong... He definatly didn do his best...I tried to comfort him by making him think over the other options... He has a nice job offer and can go for it after graduation ...And more importantly if he goes for an MBA with a work-ex, it would count much more...But actually he knew all this stuff better than me, the real problem was his not performing gud in the exam... which made him rethink of his capabilities....which he was really confident of...i tried to solace him by giving the example of cricket and other sports where sometimes a sportsman is not able to deliver his best only because he is out of form...He didnt agree to this..and even i am not convinced with this arguement.

" You dont do well in an exam....REASON:- That was not your day" sounds pretty weired to me atleast... But i was just wondering if this could apply to competetive exams like CAT and stuff...where more than the preparations your concentration and you know, speed and intellgence pays....these things may vary day to day rite.

But just being talented is not enuff you have to prove it to the world(thats what my friend says and i agree)...and if you go out of form in those rare chances to prove yourself .... its not good... i mean its just not the way it should be...but the thing which puzzles me still is .. is the out of form concept valid in competetive exams...??

may be i think i can give try to this bcause som where this is the case with me
.....may be i m not that inteligent
the point is "is there a form kind of thing in studies ""

may be i can xplain u in different way

suppode if we try to relax bak and jus give away easyly on things like college xam r so then screw our grades knoing that we could hav dane better than the other mugger easyly
if we had put in even 10% of that much efforts

but this thought dont make strong impression

and every time we take lite
even people say yaar wo to fundu hai ...like u said to ur frnd ..

but wat ultimately count is result
wether u got it by mugging r lost it by getting up 2hr bfore the xam

then comes the time when xams like
CAT,,,, GRE etc comes
and the person fails

and his whole world which stood on the fact r that thought that
he's fundu and suddenly this result makes him think our his entire personality

""is that i m really loser this fundu thing is really shit """

so where the prob is
wat i think
its in losing the confidence this type of xam wants a lot of confidence which actually comes not alone from practice but by your achievements ....like ur result and all
to understand this
look at this story ..
suppose ur facing the IIT xam and u r a topper of 10 & coaching

and on other hand ur 60% student
so this give the amount of pressure on student as compare to other som where during this he thinks """yaar shayed muche aur efforts marna tha """

after all its my life i cant take it lite for the tag of COOL ,,FUNDU

etc

if u think frm inside the other is a toppper even though u kno he is a mugger and alll it doesnt count

Hey Zullu,
I may differ about ur confidence concept, i know hell lot of guys who are damn confident(not fake for sure) and none of it is displayed in academics...
Also, being a fundoo doesnt mean that the guy puts in no efforts.....its just indicates that he has good grasping power and problem solving skills...

i dont kno wether u belive it r not but the things get rust if not used
...................
and confident over wat
.........
even u r not that kind of student as ur frnd
............
i told u wat confidence u see is ur perception abt him ............
u cannot really see inside him a
virtuall cover .....

I think the answer is yes. You said it happens in cricket. A batsman goes out of form because some minute things which seems irrelevant, are not falling in place. To add to the misery, after a few failures you get the dent in your confidence which forms the deadly combo!! I think along with the intelligence and confidence, it's the art of doing those seemingly irrelevant things perfectly which forms the silver lining separating good from the best. So an out of form student should engage in introspection and try to sort out those irritants and results will be there for everybody to see.......... (The assumption, of course, is the guy is really well prepared along with feeling confident and not able to transform his preparedness into results)

Can u give me just one example of any "minute" thing you referred to which may go wrong when the person is "out of form" ??

Prashant said...

to your amusement, you find a completely different question paper pattern and you find it difficult to adjust. Other examples can be inability to dynamically distribute time depending upon the difficulty level of various sections.

Prashant said...

there can be numerous other examples...

Pradeep Kumar Patel said...

Hmm... your example is gud enuff...but you know ...i rarely see any "goood" guy performing bad just bcoz new pattern of the paper or inability to divide time...(i believe) these qualities (dividin time and all) comes automatically to the person who is supposed to be genious ?? rite..??

Prashant said...

yes, good stroke making comes with the genius of a good batsman as well... But when these things doesn't seem to happen is what is called slump in form..Popular example - slump in form of tendulkar. booed by his home crowd.. do u mean to say that he is not skilled enough or his stroke making is flawed or he is not good at playing a certain type of bowling? I hope the answer would be no. That is why I termed these as seemingly irrelevant. If these things fall in place automatically, we doesn't pay any attention and most of the times they does. How many people hv u seen have good preparation along with confidence and they toggle.. very few and these very few need to look closely to figure out what brought their slump in form!

Pradeep Kumar Patel said...

exactly !! i agree with you....totally....and i think thats what i have been saying.....form concept works only for sports...and the few who "toggle" in studies every now and then( like a batsman out of form )can't blame it to form or the irrelevent things as you call it ....and they have no rite to call themselves a "genius" ( but a batsman out of form can still claim himself to be one of the best)...Hope it makes sense :)
